Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
(Read this with your parents. Feel free to use the glossary on the inside back cover.)
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968), an ordained Baptist minister and dedicated civil rights leader, inspired many with his vision of an America free of racial prejudice and discrimination. He even gained worldwide attention for his stirring oratory and non-violent activism.
Dr. King recognized the need for social change in the United States. He wanted an America where everyone would be treated equally.
This man of peace led protest marches, wrote persuasive letters, and spoke at large rallies. On August 28, 1963, he delivered a memorable speech to a crowd of 250,000 that had assembled in the nation’s capital. At this “March on Washington” he said:
“I have a dream.”
“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed.”
“I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
“I have a dream… little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.”
Named “Man of the Year” by Time magazine in 1963, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, and granted many honorary degrees from colleges and universities across America, Dr. King was slain by an assassin’s bullet in Memphis, Tennessee. But his dream did not die; and he continued to live on in the memories of millions. In Atlanta, Georgia, his home, his widow organized the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change immediately following his death. Later, many states honored his memory by making his birthday a holiday. Since 1986 the federal government has observed Dr. King’s birth as an official holiday. Now everyone in the nation has an opportunity to respect, honor, and celebrate the beloved leader who sought equality and justice through peaceful social change.
